Learning Support

At Wimbledon Park, we strive to remove barriers to learning, to enable all pupils to achieve equitably and participate fully at school.  In order to do this, many steps are taken to support pupils in their learning.  We maintain a primary focus on high quality inclusive classroom teaching so that all children can reach at least age-expected levels.  However, for some children, additional support is needed to help them achieve this.


The 2014 Code of Practice says: “A child or young person has special educational needs if he or she has a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her. A learning difficulty or disability is a significantly greater difficulty in learning than the majority of others of the same age. Special educational provision means educational or training provision that is additional to, or different from, that made generally for others in a mainstream setting in England.”



Children with SEN will have needs and requirements that fall into at least one of the following four areas:

  • Communication and interaction
  • Cognition and learning
  • Social, emotional and mental health
  • Sensory and/or physical

Inclusion Manager

The Inclusion Manager at Wimbledon Park is Mrs Esther Bird.  She is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and management of SEND and the co-ordination of specific provision made to support individual children:

  • Liaising and advising class teachers and learning support staff on SEND and inclusion matters
  • Supporting the assessment process identifying children in need of additional support or with SEND
  • Writing termly SEND support plans alongside teachers
  • Overseeing the records of all children with SEND
  • Monitoring the success of intervention programmes and planning further interventions where progress is slower than expected.
  • Liaising with parents of children with SEND
  • Contributing and/or arranging for contributions to the training of staff on SEND
  • Making referrals to and liaising with external agencies
  • Writing, alongside parents and teachers, applications for Education, Health and Care Plans
