Welcome to Year 5. We look forward to working with you as your child goes on this exciting learning journey! The team is led by Miss Jessop (5J - Year Group Lead), Mr Roberts (5R) and Miss Martin (5M). The children will also be supported by Elaine Puckey, Sandra Hill and Tracy Adams.
During Year 5, we encourage a growing sense of responsibility and independence in our pupils, while ensuring that each child is supported in their learning journey. Independence is encouraged through responsibility of stationery, completion of home learning and reflection of behaviour. We hope that you will support us in developing this independence by giving the children increasing responsibilities at home.
We look forward to meeting you over the Autumn term and are available to discuss any questions or concerns you may have regarding your child’s progress, achievements and experiences at school. Forging strong relationships with families is important to us and we encourage you to discuss the needs of your children as they arise.

Curriculum
English is taught daily and explores a range of reading, speaking and writing skills. In addition, the children will be working on developing their self-editing skills. Throughout the year, we will be using a range of high-quality texts to inspire the children. Some of the texts that we will be using include The Buried Crown by Ally Sherrick, When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr and Arthur and the Golden Rope by Joe Todd-Stanton.
Maths will be taught on a daily basis and continued to be delivered microscopically with tasks consisting of fluency, reasoning, problem solving and greater depth challenges. Additionally, the children will be completing short daily fluency sessions with a focus on developing their key skills and speed of recall.
Our Science topics this year will build upon knowledge from previous years. Science topics include Properties and Changes of Materials, Animals including Humans (Puberty will be covered during these sessions), Earth and Space, Forces and Living Things and Their Habitats.
In our wider curriculum, during the Autumn term, we have the opportunity to learn about the culture in Scandinavia and the invasion of Britain by the Anglo-Saxons. Before exploring the Vikings, 20th Century conflict and Biomes later in the year.
All PE sessions will be run by AMSA. 5J will take place on Thursday afternoons from 1.30-3.30pm. 5M and 5R will take place between 11.15am and 12.15pm across two split sessions on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Home Learning
All home learning will be set and completed on Google Classroom. During the first week of term, your child will be provided with their login information and this can also be found in the front of their home learning book.
Home learning will be set every Wednesday to be handed in on the following Monday. Home learning will consist of Maths, SPaG, a Guided Reading extract and either Science or Topic and these will be set as online quizzes on Google Classroom. The children will be provided with a home learning book to complete any calculations and record their weekly spelling test scores.
As well as the homework that is set, the pupils are encouraged to be reading as much as possible and practise their times tables through Time Tables Rockstars (https://ttrockstars.com/) or other games (https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/mental-maths). We will have a weekly Timetables Rockstars competition between the classes in Year 5.
