For week ending 24th January 2020

_______________

This week’s learning has focussed around the traditional tale of The Gingerbread Man. The children have enjoyed the story, re-written parts of it themselves, made “Lost” posters to ask fellow staff and pupils if they have seen their class gingerbread man, and made their own gingerbread man from shortbread, which was an enormous success, and many thanks to Mrs Bacon for masterminding this.

In maths we have been learning about the number 16, and again practiced the concepts of one more and one less.  We will revisit this again next week when we look at number 17.  In Music the children had the chance to bang a huge drum with different dynamics and practised singing nursery rhymes, finding some parts of Three Blind Mice quite tricky.

Next week we will look at the story of The Elves and the Shoemaker and try to set up shoe shops in our classrooms.  There is lots of potential for getting the children to engage in role play, pretend to handle money etc.  We have found that virtually all of them have experienced a shoe shop – having their feet measured etc – and this is usually a very successful week.

Requests and reminders

  • Please keep practising with your child to change their clothes themselves for PE –there is a gradual improvement with this, so many thanks to those of you who are trying to get your child to be a little more independent.
  • There is an INSET day next Friday.  I forgot this and have therefore messed up the Show and Tell rota for next week, so those children who are down for the 31st will of course do theirs the following Monday – watch out for the new rota
  • The writing workshop is on Wednesday 5th February at 6pm in the Studio – all welcome.

Have a lovely weekend

This week’s quotes:

A child is showing their teacher their drawing.  The teacher asks them to write their name on it.  “ok m-darling…” is the colloquial response !

A child says to his teacher – “do you know where I am going tonight after school?...to the competition…” – he means the optician.

A child is counting along a number line with his teacher and skips over the number 15 each time.  When asked why he says  “…oh, number 15 annoys me so I don’t say it…”

We are used to being called “mummy” on occasions but I was rather put out when a child turned to me and said “…Granny?...”
